Darts Legend becomes Afghan charity patron

World famous darts player Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor has agreed to become a patron of national charity Afghan Heroes, set up by the mothers of soldiers killed in the Afghanistan conflict.

Phil Taylor with Denise HarrisThe world champion showed his support for the charity at the 2009 Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, where he met with charity founders Denise Harris, Jane Whitehouse, Deborah Simpson and Sharon Backhouse.

In setting up the charity the mums aim to provide support for those on the front line, the families of those who have fallen and the returning personnel who have witnessed the losses of their fellow comrades.

Founder Denise Harris said: “Phil Taylor supporting our charity is fantastic; we hope his big personality will make more people aware of our cause.

Phil Taylor added: “I feel really proud to be part of something as commendable as this charity. The mums are doing such a praiseworthy thing I only hope I can do them proud.

“Not only will this charity help people in similar situations to them, it is also a fitting memorial to their sons and daughters, who heroically lost their lives.”

If you would like to support Afghan Heroes a new song has been launched which can be downloaded from several sites including itunes, Amazon, Tunecorps and many other leading music sources. Called ‘Afghan Dawn’ the song costs 79p with all proceeds going towards the charity.

I watched the awards ceremony and even as a man, I could not hold back the tears for the bravery of our soldiers and the sacrifices they are prepared to make for the sake of freedom and democracy.
I served in the South African Police for 20 years and have the utmost respect for anyone in uniform.
Thank you for what you are doing for the men and women in Afghanistan, in spite of the tragedy and heartache that you have been through.
We live in Essex and if you need our help in any way, just ask.
    Kind regards
    Barry and Alta Barnard
